Costa coffee has been running a promotion whereby it offers 50p hot drinks for three days this week as it marks its 50th birthday. The deal sees customers pick up up to five hot drinks per person using the deal, which is valid through the Costa Club mobile which normally just has to be scanned when purchasing your hot drink. The offer is supposed to run from Tuesday, April 13 to Thursday, April 15 at participating stores.

But clearly, the rollout hasn’t been as smooth as Costa Coffee may have liked.

People have been taking to Twitter in the masses this morning to air their grievances to the coffee chain.

One person wrote: “Great incentive. Shape the app doesn’t work! I mean did no one at Costa anticipate the demand? McDonald’s coffee it is then!”

Another person wrote: “Shame that you can’t log in to the app so the stores aren’t honouring it – drove all the way to specifically get a coffee on my lunch break!”

One frustrated customer added: “50p drinks with the app are all well and good but not being able to log into the app with an error is rather frustrating. Can’t even sign up for a new account. So much for my cheap coffee.”

Another said: “Trying to get my 50p coffee via the Costa Coffee app but I can’t even log in – what’s the point of doing it if the app can’t handle the amount of users logging in today.”

People have been trying to log in to the app for hours now, while one person even said it hasn’t been working for the last three days.

When users go to open the Costa Coffee Club app, an error message appears saying: “Sorry, It’s not you, it’s us. Please try again later.”

Costa Coffee’s official Twitter responded to one customer querying about the app not working.

The company said: “Really sorry about this. So many people have been trying to use the app that we’ve been seeing some technical issues.

“You can still get your 50p drink, just show a member of the team your app when you order and they can process this through the till for you.”

While Costa Coffee advises you to show team members your app in spite of the crash, numerous people have said they were turned away or forced to pay full price when attempting this.

Dan Roberts tweeted: “Costa Coffee app didn’t work this morning in Loudwater. Was charged full price and told to contact someone for the difference back?”

One angry reviewer tweeted Costa: “The complete embarrassment of being told it’s my fault (despite the app messaging saying contrary) it’s not working in-store, being refused the offer and being told tough.

“Then I was made to look like I’m an issue for querying it. Dismissive staff and no help. Shambles offer.”

Charlotte Keeney complained: “Went out of my way to go to Costa to get my coffee. Only to be turned away and told the app isn’t working. Absolutely disgraceful!”

When will the Costa app be working?

As it stands, it’s not entirely sure when the Costa app will be up and running as the company hasn’t given any time frames for now. contacted Costa Coffee, and a spokesperson said: “We’re experiencing some technical issues with our Costa Coffee app and are working hard to resolve it.

“Customers are still able to redeem our ‘any hot drink for 50p’ offer by showing their Costa Coffee Club app at the till point of any participating stores.

“We would like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience this has caused.”
