How to make a hamburger

McDonalds is one of many fast food outlets to have closed during the coronavirus lockdown. While stores are slowly starting to reopen, you may have to wait a while before you can get your hands on one of their famous burgers. But worry not, as it’s easy to make your own hamburgers at home.

Ingredients (To make 4 burgers)

Burger buns x4
Lean beef mince 500g
1 onion
1 egg
Vegetable oil (2 tbsp)
Salt and pepper, to season

Add your beef mince to a large mixing bowl.

Finely chop or mince your onion, as you don’t want big bits of onion in the burger patties.

Add the chopped onion to the mixing bowl.

Crack an egg in a separate bowl and add it to the mix.

Sprinkle in a large pinch of salt and pepper.

With clean hands, mix the burger mixture until it is well combined.

Separate the mix into four and roll into balls.

Using the palm of your hand, press down on the balls until they are pattie shaped and some 3cm in thickness.

Put the patties on a plate, cover with cling film and allow to firm up for at least 30 minutes in the fridge.

When you’re ready to fry your burgers, heat two tablespoons of vegetable oil in a pan over a medium heat (you can also cook burgers on the BBQ).

Add the patties and allow them to brown on one side, for about five minutes.

Flip the burgers over with a spatula and allow them to fry until the burgers are cooked through.

Avoid pressing down on the meat, as the burgers will lose some of their juiciness.

When cooked, take the meat off the heat and allow it to rest while you assemble the buns.

On plates lay out your burger buns, add the burgers and assemble any toppings and condiments.

Top tips

When making a hamburger the flavour possibilities are endless!

Try adding lettuce leaves or rocket for extra veg, along with a dollop of relish for a tangy taste.

You can also add sliced tomato or beetroot for more crunch.

For a spicy twist add hot sauce, or spread some horseradish on your burger buns for a kick of heat.

To make your hamburger a cheeseburger, consider adding a few slices of American cheese.

If you want a slightly posher burger add some chunks of extra mature cheddar, or slices of camembert for extra gooeyness.

You can also spruce up your plain old burger buns for cheesy ones, or a multiseed one if you’re looking for a healthier burger.

If you’re trying to cut down on your carb intake, a bunless burger served with a fresh salad can also be delicious.
