How to make an old fashioned – best whiskey cocktail to celebrate World Whisky Day

Developed during the 19th century and given its name in the 1880s, the Old Fashioned is a timeless classic. But did you know its the only cocktail believed to be in existence that has a glass named after it, known as a rocks glass?

A rocks glass is a short tumbler often used to serve spirits, but is named after this delicious whisky cocktail.

Old fashioned glasses typically have a wide brim and a thick, sturdy base.

This is so the non-liquid ingredients can be mashed with a muddler before the main liquid ingredients are added.

Here’s how you can make an Old Fashioned – in an old fashioned glass – at home.

How to make an Old Fashioned

  • Scottish distilleries at risk of devastation from Trump tariffs

What you’ll need:

  • 60ml whisky
  • 10ml Sugar Syrup
  • 2 dashes angostura bitters
  • Orange zest

Add all ingredients to an ice-filled mixing glass and stir well

Strain into a tumbler over ice

Garnish with an orange twist, lemon twist or both.

Try the Darkness 8-year-old single malt for a smokey and chocolatey finish. Or why not give the Tobermory 12 Year Old a go – launched in celebration of the distillery returning to life after a two year break.

You can also try this pre-made Old Fashioned cocktail mix here – finish with a slice of orange peel.

A simple tip to improve your Old Fashioned depends on the ice.

And Old Fashioned may be a sipping cocktail, but if you load up on ice you’ll quickly find your beverage has turned into a watery mess.

To stop this from happening, avoid small cubes – you could invest in an ice sphere.
