KFC Sold Out of Plant-Based Chicken In Just Five Hours

It’s a good time to be a fried chicken chain. Sure, Popeyes’ new sandwich has basically broken the internet—but KFC’s new plant-based chicken is giving the fast food sensation a run for its money. 

We reported yesterday that a KFC location in Atlanta was partnering with Beyond Meat to bring Beyond Fried Chicken to life. 

Well, suffice it to say that today’s test run went amazingly well: The restaurant, located on Cobb Parkway, sold out before noon. 

Lines were wrapped around the building starting at 8 a.m. with double-looped drive-thru lines, according to a KFC rep. For reference, guests purchased in five hours the amount of Beyond Fried Chicken that KFC would normally sell on average of popcorn chicken in a week. That’s a lotta plant-based chicken. 

We tried said plant-based chicken and found that, while the appearance left something to be desired, the taste and texture is comparable to any other fast food chicken nugget in the game. 

The Beyond Fried Chicken comes in two forms: nuggets, which are breaded and ready-to-eat with various dipping sauces, and boneless wings, which come with your choice of Nashville Hot, Honey BBQ, or Buffalo Sauce. 

Will KFC take this vegetarian “meat” nationwide? Only time will tell—but, judging by this test run, we’d say it’s a safe bet.
