Listeria monocytogenes found in food can cause symptoms similar to the flu, including high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

In rare cases, the virus can become more severe, and cause serious complications, such as meningitis.

People who are more vulnerable to listeria infections are those over 65, pregnant women, babies less than one month old and people with weak immune systems.

Lidl has issued point of sale notices to be displayed in all supermarkets which sell the Eridanous Greek style smoked mackerel.

The notices are there to inform customers and tell them what to do next if they have the product at home.

The Food Standards Agency shared its advice and said: “If you have bought the above product do not eat it.

“Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.”

Customers can contact Lidl Customer services by telephone on 0370 4441234 or by email at [email protected] if they have any questions.

Why are products recalled?

The Food Standards Agency explained food and drinks are sometimes recalled or withdrawn if there is a problem which means they should not be sold.

Customers are then asked to return the product to the supermarket for a full refund.

The products could be unsafe to eat because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect, or there is a health risk.

Recently Asda recalled the Asda White Lasagne Sauce because of possible microbiological contamination risk and customers were urged to return the product to their nearest store.
