These Kitchen Gadgets Were Made for Left-Handed Cooks

How privileged am I — as a righty — to blindly be able to use every single utensil and tool that crosses my path!? To be honest, I didn’t know that left-handed people had so many gripes about conventionally designed kitchen gadgets until I asked my left-handed friend to vent about her experiences in the kitchen. One long rant later, I realized I had a lot of learning to do.

To make up for my ignorance, here are eight common-use kitchen gadgets designed specifically for left-handed cooks.

1. Fiskars Left-Handed Scissors

Kitchn editors firmly believe that everyone should have at least two pairs of scissors in their kitchen at all times. If you have a lefty in the household, you may need four pairs — you know, just to be safe.

Buy: Fiskars Left-Handed Scissors, $9

2. Kuhn Rikon Original 4-Inch Swiss Peeler

Unlike some pesky peelers, this $5 Y-peeler works in both directions so everyone in your house can use it. Plus, Ina and Giada swear by it, so that means it’s the best of the best.

Buy: Kuhn Rikon Original 4-Inch Swiss Peeler, $5

3. Zeroll Universal Food Portion Scoop

Put your favorite lefty on pancake-making, ice cream-scooping, and muffin-baking duty — this dishwasher-safe scoop is ergonomically designed for both right- and left-handed use.

Buy: Zeroll Universal Food Portion Scoop, $13

This borosilicate glass measuring cup was designed with lefties in mind. No more awkwardly hold up a conventionally designed righty cup or craning your neck to see the measurements!

5. Left-Handed Folding 4-in-1 Corkscrew

I never knew how frustrating opening a wine bottle could be for a lefty until I saw my good friend struggle with such a simple task. Give the gift of a counter-clockwise corkscrew to left-handed friends who you want to have wine and cheese nights with.

6. Bartelli Ambidextrous Safety Can Opener

Same goes for the simple task of opening a can — safely! This smooth-edge can opener spins in both directions.

Buy: Bartelli Ambidextrous Safety Can Opener, $13

7. Joyce Chen Left-Handed Burnished Bamboo Spatula

Even things like spoons can favor a righty over a lefty! This spatula is angled just so, so that even lefties can scrape up every last bit of food in the pot.

Buy: Joyce Chen Left-Handed Burnished Bamboo Spatula, $5

8. Lamson Chef’s Left-Hand Slotted Turner

Flip burgers, fish fillets, and veggies with ease with this lightweight heat-resistant, carbon steel slotted spatula. It is, of course, angled for lefties.
