As people grow older, changes in muscle, hormones and metabolism can make it harder to stay fit and keep up a healthy weight. But one woman regained her passion for fitness in her 50s, and wants to prove exercising later in life doesn’t have to be a chore.

After retiring five years ago, Dawn Kissack found the time to revisit one of her biggest passions in life – swimming.

She was a keen competitor back when she was younger, but life got in the way and she wasn’t able to swim as much as she would have liked.

But after she retired, Dawn decided it was time to pick it back up and start competing again.

Since she’s been back in the pool, she has taken part in a number of competitions and is now reaping the rewards of being as fit as she used to be.

She has taken part in the European Masters and European Championships, competing for the first time four years ago and becoming the 50m freestyle master swimming champion in her age group (55-59).

Dawn is also now representing David Lloyd Clubs in the 2023 World Master Championships in the 60-65 category, with the brand being the only gym to sponsor over 50s competing in the competition.

Dawn beamed: “At 59 I am still setting myself new challenges, working on my swimming technique and achieving training goals.

“I enjoy being active and feeling great and reaping the rewards of regular exercise.”

To help others find their inner fit-self, Dawn has shared some tips and tricks to keeping fit in later life.

So she can become the fittest she can, she keeps a swimming memoir on how to become quicker, improve her technique and improve her diet.

In the future, she also hopes to write a book for over-50s who are looking to pick up swimming when they hit middle age.

Dawn admitted she currently feels there isn’t a lot of information out there for those who are looking to pick it up in their 50s.

She now swims four times a week and finds that it helps with her mental health by enabling her to switch off and improving her mindfulness.

She said: “I have no doubt that exercise, not least swimming, is the best way to maintain a healthy mind and body for everyone including the over-50s.

“My love of swimming was interrupted by the pandemic, but I have returned to the pool with renewed enthusiasm.

“I am now training with the help of David Lloyd Clubs’ pools and gyms for the Masters World Swimming Championships in Japan next year!”

Swimming is an ideal workout for older people because it is low impact, presenting little risk of injury.

Not only that, but water exercises are a simple full-body workout, as people use all muscle groups.
