It was believed a big brekkie was better for the metabolism – “breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dine like a pauper” – but findings throw this into doubt. An Aberdeen University team found it does not matter which meal is the biggest because our bodies treat all calories the same.

The study found 30 dieters – 16 men and 14 women – who either had an early feast or an evening blow-out lost just over seven pounds a month.

But a big meal first DID mean they stayed full longer.

In journal Cell Metabolism, Professor Alexandra Johnstone said: “There is not likely to be one diet that fits all.”
