Dr Michael Mosley, inventor of The Fast 800 plan, regularly shares weight loss advice. Some research suggests that regularly eating a healthy breakfast may help slimmers lose weight and help them to lead a healthier lifestyle. Dr Mosley advises slimmers to opt for a low-carb breakfast.

Following a low-carb diet can have many health benefits, including weight loss.

Dr Mosley recommends opting for a protein-rich breakfast, to help you keep fuller for longer.

He said: “One of the main reasons for opting for a low-carb breakfast is that you won’t then get famished in the middle of the morning and feel tempted to tuck into a pastry.

“Lots of studies have shown that if you eat a protein-rich breakfast, perhaps something with egg or fish, then this will keep you fuller for longer.”

This means slimmers are less likely to snack throughout the day.

A high protein diet can also help slimmers build lean muscle when combined with exercise.

This can help burn more calories throughout the day, which can aid weight loss.

Dr Mosley explained: “It is well known that moderately increasing the amount of protein in your diet can help you feel more satisfied after meals.

“What is less well known, though, is that the time of day that you eat protein also matters.

“To test whether protein at the first meal of the day could help people to feel fuller for longer, a US-based study in 2014 divided volunteers into three groups.

“One group ate a breakfast containing 35g of protein, the second group ate breakfast containing 13g protein, the third group meanwhile, skipped breakfast altogether.

“Later on that morning, the volunteers were tested for levels of dopamine, the chemical that drives our reward circuits. They were also asked to rate the intensity of their pre-lunch food cravings.”

The results showed that the high-protein breakfast group recorded the highest dopamine levels and also the lowest pre-lunch food cravings.

Eggs are a great breakfast option as they are high in protein and low in calories.

For those with a sweet tooth, homemade granola with yoghurt and fruit is ideal.

Mr Mosley added: “I’ve done a number of experiments on myself where I have alternated eating a low-carb breakfast, followed next day by something higher carb while measuring my blood sugar levels with a monitor.

“Eating a croissant, for example, makes my blood sugars soar and then crash, leaving me starving.

“Eating a portion of omelette, with exactly the same calories, produced only a minor blood sugar blip.”

The expert also warned against consuming fruit juices and smoothies in the morning.

He said this is because juices purchased at the supermarket are likely to contain high levels of sugar, resulting in a blood sugar spike.
