Dr Michael Mosley is the guru behind The Fast 800, a series of diets which start with a short-term rapid weight loss phase, before moving into intermittent fasting and then taking on a Way of Life approach. In terms of the best snacks to eat when dieting, the weight loss guru recommends nuts, but reveals which ones to “avoid”.
Convenient and nourishing, nuts make a taste snack, and despite being high in fat, they make an important contribution to a healthy, balanced diet.
A serving of mixed nuts provides a variety of nutritional benefits; for being rich in antioxidants, supporting gut health, aiding weight management and supporting a healthy heart.
But not all nuts are good for you, according to Dr Michael.
He said: “There are a number of low calorie foods that can be used to increase your overall food volume.
“It is possible to find snacks which come in under 50 to 100 calories a serving which means you can supplement your three small meals with a couple of extras if you need something to tide you over and keep your blood sugar levels even.
“Nuts make good snacks, too, but try to avoid the salted or sweetened kind, which can be moreish.
“Go for things such as unsalted almonds or walnuts that you know you can stop eating after a small handful.”
Two almonds equal 28 calories whilst seven walnut halves equal 90 calories.
As for what other low calorie snacks Dr Michael suggests, miso soup is “nutritious, warming and tasty”.
A just 21 calories a serving, it is a great way to keep hunger pangs at bay.
He also recommended: “Crudités are a great option to snack on.
“There are so many varieties too, so you could vary your snacks to avoid boredom.
“Try slices of a tricolour of peppers, carrot batons, celery sticks, or cauliflower.”
In terms of what fruits to chose, Dr Michael previously spoke about “going easy on bananas”.
He said: “Berries, apples and pears are fine, but limit tropical fruits such as mango, melon and pineapple.”
As for why berries are “the best to opt for”.
A serving of 100g of blueberries comes in at 57 calories and satiates a sweetness craving.
They are also king of the antioxidants and known as a superfood.
