Tom Kerridge lost 12 stone after gradually putting on lots of weight during his career as a chef and landlord. It is this lifestyle he has credited for piling on the pounds.

Tom was afraid his weight would prevent him from living a long and healthy life.

When he turned 40, and had reached 30 stone, he began to change his lifestyle.

The first, and perhaps most effective method, was giving up alcohol.

The chef said: “I own pubs and, you know, I’m quite good at tasting.

“So I knocked all booze on the head. Stopped drinking, went completely teetotal.”

He also told the Radio Times giving up carbohydrates and starting swimming helped him to slim.

A study in animals found that mice given alcohol over three days ate considerably more.
