Stomach bloating can be uncomfortable and even painful, and many healthy foods can contribute to the problem. A nutritionist shared the best tips and lifestyle changes to reduce bloating and the ultimate drink to avoid feeling the discomfort.
Many people are not aware that the hot weather triggers bloating, as it is something that happens when the body becomes dehydrated of vital water and electrolytes and tries to retain what it has left.
The fluid retention can lead to digestive bloating, making you feel uncomfortable and sometimes even tired.
Nutritionists have agreed the best solution to fight stomach bloating in the summer months is by staying hydrated.
However, it is not so much about the amount of water you drink, but about continuously sipping water throughout the whole day.
Krist Best, from Regular Girl, explained: “Your stomach may become bloated when your digestive system can’t break down the food you consume.
“Your body needs fluids for this process. To try and prevent this, it’s vital you drink plenty of water throughout the day, including mealtimes.“
However, for those who don’t particularly enjoy drinking water, there is a better and tastier solution: coconut water.
Coconut water helps re-hydrate the body quickly as it has naturally occurring electrolytes that help flight dehydration symptoms.

Registered Associate Nutritionist, Kelly Light, explained: “Water is the best option for staying hydrated during a heatwave. Coconut water is another good option since it generally contains fewer calories than fruit juice and can taste particularly refreshing on a hot day.”
Many foods can also trigger stomach bloating and those who struggle with this should make sure they avoid them.
Personal Trainer, Hayley Madigan, warned: “When we eat foods higher in salt, our bodies retain more water. Alcohol and caffeine also affect our bloating.”
Some healthy foods like fruits can cause severe bloating as health expert, Mike Jones, explained: “It’s common for people to significantly increase the amounts of fruits and vegetables they eat when the sunshine arrives.

“This often leads to increased fibre levels, which isn’t always a bad thing, but does have the potential to cause bloating. Especially when people have been on a low fibre processed diet throughout the winter.”
Instead, people should opt for food with high water content, such as spinach, avocado and yoghurt and avoid fibre-rich vegetables, including broccoli and cauliflower which trigger bloating.
For those who struggle with bloating, nutritionist Kelly Light shared some tips and small lifestyle changes that help minimise it.
“Firstly, limit intake of things like fruit juices and smoothies, as well as foods known for their gas-producing properties such as beans or fermented foods.
“Secondly, be mindful of chewing your food properly as opposed to gulping it down quickly! Swallowing lots of excess air whilst chewing gum or consuming fizzy drinks can also be a trigger,” she explained.
“It is also helpful to try eating small and frequent meals as opposed to one huge meal.”
She continued: “Sleep makes a difference too, so try prioritising your sleeping regime and see if you notice a difference. Other things that can help include regular exercise and avoiding tight fitting clothing around your belly.”
