To lose weight, some slimmers will try to achieve their goals by following a strict diet plan. Others will try to lose a few pounds by cutting certain food groups out of their diet. Ditching one food product in particular could be enough to start the weight loss journey, nutritionalist Shona Wilkinson told Express.co.uk. By removing sugar from the diet, slimmers can shape up but they must follow an important rule.

Sugar can be found in foods including fruits, bread, cakes, drinks and sauces.
However, cutting it out of the diet completely could be the best way to shape up, Shona explained.
She said: “To put it bluntly – sugar gives us empty calories and contributes to weight gain.
“Sugar makes our food taste great, gives us a quick boost of energy, and makes us feel good – at least temporarily – but when consumed frequently it can have negative effects on our health and well-being.”
When making the change, dieters must make sure to check all foods for hidden traces of sugar.
“Sugar is also difficult to get away from – it is hidden where we don’t expect to find it,” Shona warned.
“It is in canned foods, sauces, soups, breads, ready meals, crisps and most other processed foods – so watch out for this and read labels.”
If cutting sugar from the diet, slimmers should be careful to check the ingredients list in order to get the best results.
When going sugar-free, Shona explained slimmers must be careful not to do it too quickly.
She told Express.co.uk: “As well as causing us to put on weight, this surge in insulin often makes our blood sugar level drop too low, causing an energy dip, concentration problems, and cravings for more sugar for another boost – and so the cycle continues.
“We know it’s difficult but try to reduce your sugar consumption slowly. You will be surprised to find that in just a few weeks of avoiding sugar, if you eat something sugary, it will taste so sweet and be off putting for you.”
Following a diet plan high in fat will leave slimmers feeling fuller for longer and less likely to eat unhealthy snacks.
For those wanting a structured diet, a keto plan is high in fat and low in carbs.
Those on the plan will eat less than 25 grams net carbs a day to help the body enter into a fat-burning state called ketosis.
Slimmers can combine this with a plan with a moderate protein content which will help them burn fat quickly.
